Help & Tutorials
New to EnviroData-NM? This guide walks you through everything you can do on the site- from exploring the map and downloading data to creating projects and generating reports. Use the table of contents to jump to a topic.
1. Getting Started
EnviroData-NM is a free public application that brings New Mexico's environmental and public-health data together on one interactive map. Anyone can browse the map and download data without an account. Creating a free account additionally lets you save projects, generate reports, and share your work with colleagues.
Create an account
- Open the Create new account page (also linked from the login panel).
- Fill in your details and submit. We'll email you a verification link.
- Click the link in that email to activate your account, then accept the Terms & Conditions.
Use the login panel on the right side of the page. Enter your username or email and password and click Login. Once signed in, your username and a Logout button appear in the top navigation bar.
Forgot your password?
In the login panel choose Request new password, enter your email, and we'll send you a reset link. Open the link to set a new password.
Your profile
After logging in, click your username in the top bar to open your profile, where you can update your name, organization, contact details, and change your password.
2. Explore the Map
The Explore Map page is the heart of the site- an interactive map where you can turn data layers on and off, inspect features, and search for places.
Working with layers
- Browse layer groups: Layers are organized into expandable groups in the left panel. Click a group to open it.
- Turn a layer on/off: Use the checkbox next to a layer name to show or hide it on the map.
- Adjust transparency: Drag a layer's opacity slider to blend it with the layers beneath.
- Layer menu: The three-dot menu on each layer lets you read its description, zoom to its extent, and adjust how it's drawn.
Navigating the map
- Zoom & pan: Scroll or use the +/− buttons to zoom; click and drag to pan.
- Identify features: Click a feature on the map to open a popup of its attributes. If several features overlap, use the popup's previous/next arrows to step through them.
- Find a place: Use the placename search to jump to a named location.
- Measure: Use the Distance and Area tools above the map to measure along a line or around a region.
Search and filter attributes
The Attribute Search panel lets you browse a layer's records in a table, filter them by their values or by an area you draw, and export the results.
- Pick a layer: In the Attribute Search panel choose a layer from the Select Layer dropdown. Its records open in an Attribute Table that shows how many features are displayed (for example, "6 of 134 features").
- Filter by value: Choose a field, pick an operator (such as is equal to, contains, greater than), type a value, and click Add Filter. Each filter you add appears as a chip under Active Filters; remove a chip or use Clear All to reset.
- Filter by area: Use Rectangle, Polygon, or Upload AOI to limit the table to features that fall inside an area you draw or import.
- Select rows: Use the row checkboxes to highlight specific features on the map.
- Export or save: Download the filtered results with Export CSV or Export SHP, or use Add to Project (when logged in) to save them to one of your projects.
3. Drawing & Generating Reports
From the Explore page you can define an Area of Interest (AOI) and generate a PDF report summarizing the data that falls within it. You need to be logged in to generate reports.
Define an Area of Interest
Open the Generate Report tools in the left panel and choose how to define your area:
- Draw Rectangle or Draw Polygon directly on the map.
- Point Buffer / Line Buffer- drop a point or draw a line, then enter a buffer distance (in feet) to create an area around it.
- Upload AOI File- import a GeoJSON, zipped Shapefile, KML, KMZ, or GeoPackage. For files with multiple layers, you'll be asked which layer(s) to use.
- Use Project AOI- reuse the area from one of your existing projects.
Use Edit Polygon, Delete Polygon, or Clear All to refine your area.
Generate a report
- With an area defined, pick a report template from the report list.
- Click Generate Report to build a PDF that summarizes the data intersecting your area.
- Download the finished PDF- and, if you're logged in, optionally save it to one of your projects.
Export a map
You can also export the current map view as a cartographic PDF (with title, legend, and scale), or use Save Map to store the current view as a shareable link you can revisit later (see Saved Maps).
4. Explore Data
The Explore Data page is a catalog of the available datasets, grouped by topic. It's the quickest way to find and download a specific dataset.
- Browse or search: Scan the topic cards or type in the search box to filter them by name.
- Open a category: Click a card to see the datasets (and any sub-groups) it contains.
- Download a layer: Choose a download format- GeoJSON, GeoPackage (GPKG), KML, or Shapefile (SHP). Large datasets stream as they download.
5. My Projects
A project ties together an Area of Interest, the reports generated for it, and any files you upload. The My Projects page is organized into four tabs:
- My Projects- projects you own.
- Shared with Me- projects others have shared with you.
- Report Templates- reusable report definitions you've created.
- Saved Maps- map views you've saved as shareable links.
Create a project
- Click New Project and give it a title and (optional) description.
- Click Define Area of Interest to open the AOI workspace.
- Draw polygons, add point/line buffers, or upload a geodata file. You can add multiple polygons- they're combined into a single area automatically.
- Watch the live metrics (number of polygons, total area in acres, perimeter) and GeoJSON preview as you work.
- Click Save Project. Your project is queued for processing.
6. Project Lifecycle
After you save a project, the system generates its outputs in the background. The project card shows a status badge that updates automatically:
- Queued- waiting to be processed.
- In progress- outputs are being generated.
- Complete- your files are ready to download.
- Error- something went wrong; you can retry.
Download and upload files
When processing completes, your project includes a generated PDF report, a Shapefile, and a KMZ of your area- download any of them from the project card or detail view. You can also upload your own documents (PDFs, Office files, images) to keep everything together; documents you upload can be deleted later.
Revise the Area of Interest
Need to change your area? Open the project and choose Revise AOI. This creates a new revision and regenerates the outputs, while keeping the previous revision's history. Each revision has its own status and map view, and an errored revision can be retried with Retry.
